About the Lahaina Restoration Foundation

Mission Statement
For the benefit of both our residents and visitors, and in cooperation with others we strive to faithfully restore, maintain and interpret the physical, historical, and cultural legacy of Lahaina, Maui, first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
The Lahaina Restoration Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Hawaii not-for-profit organization chartered in 1962. Its purpose is to cooperate with all community-oriented interests in an effort to restore, maintain and preserve the physical and cultural legacies and history of the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. This effort is for the cultural and economic benefit of those of Hawaiian ancestry and then for all other residents and visitors.

Third generation "Kamaina" (local) resident George “Keoki” Freeland, has been selected as Executive Director of the Foundation owing to his heritage and work experience in Lahaina and West Maui. He is ideal for leadership of the Foundation into the 21st century. In the interim, James C. Luckey, a businessman from Oregon who fell instantly in love with the beauty and history of Lahaina and West Maui has blessed the Foundation with twenty-five years of direction and management. Jim Luckey today acts as Executive Director Emeritus and Honorary Director.

The Foundation by-laws provide that the powers of the Board of Directors may be exercised by an Executive Committee consisting of the President and eight other Directors who shall have such powers, perform such duties and observe such restrictions as the Board of Directors may delegate to it from time to time, including the immediate overview and management of business affairs of the corporation.

The committee meets whenever required to research and study all matters upon which the Board of Directors has the final vote. Thus the Executive Committee must strive for balance between no-holds barred openness to new ideas and rigorous scrutiny of established wisdom. This equitable practice has afforded the Board of Directors the means for making fair and democratic decisions.

The success of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation from its inception and hopefully into the third millennium lies largely in the guiding power of the Board of Directors. They have been selected to serve the Foundation based upon their experience and abilities in areas of business, community and environmental interests. Their number has included presidents and officers of corporations, key people in the fields of agriculture, newspapers, radio, television, land development, community planning, real estate, insurance, banking, law, investing, teaching, architecture, retailing, ocean activities, entertainment, archaeology, the arts, religion, computing, high technology, manufacturing, and tourism. Professional women and housewives have shared equally on all boards beginning with Mrs. Keith Tester, the first president of the Foundation (1962-1965). As a result the Foundation has been and continues to be represented by a democratic and very talented governing body.
